BREASTFEEDING AND ITS IMPORTANCE FOR THE BABY | BY YENNY MEDINA

Early start of breastfeeding

Breastfeeding should start during the first hour after delivery. This begins the development of the mother-child bond.

If there are no obstetric contraindications, the newborn, after receiving initial neonatal care, should be placed directly on the mother's abdomen and chest, in an upright position and in skin-to-skin contact.
Skin-to-skin contact should be started immediately after birth, for the first half hour, and should be maintained as long as possible, at least for an uninterrupted hour.

The delay in the initiation of Breastfeeding is related to an increased risk of neonatal death, particularly associated with infections.

Colostrum properties and importance

Colostrum is a liquid secreted by the mammary glands during pregnancy and the first days after delivery, made up of immunoglobulins, water, proteins, fats and carbohydrates in a yellow, serous liquid.

Colostrum is an ideal and essential food, since it contains the baby's first immunization and also solves the food needs of its small, not yet mature organs.

The amino acids that make it up are vital albumin contributions to cell metabolism and cell regeneration. Immunoglobulins (A, D, E, G, and M) are antibodies of vital importance and determinants for prophylaxis and prevention against infections that can attack the body.

Continue Breastfeeding at home

Instruct the mother before leaving the medical center so that the exclusive BF continues for 6 months.
Encourage breastfeeding on demand, infant-led feeding, breastfeeding baby whenever he wants during the day and night. Monitor the effectiveness of BF by controlling the infant's weight gain. Avoid using bottles which increase the risk of infection and interfere with BF. If necessary, give breast milk with a spoon or in a glass. Practice manual milk extraction when necessary. Evaluate the technique of giving breast milk periodically, to detect possible problems with BF. The mother should consult the doctor before consuming any medication. The mother should not consume alcohol, tobacco or drugs.
Always motivate the mother to continue breastfeeding.
